Bountiful opportunities

When I finished my internship at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, I started thinking of the different places I would like to work. I named the two big papers in South Florida, The Miami Herald and The Sun-Sentinel. I thought that because I was getting a journalism degree that I had to work in conjunction with print media, but I was wrong.

I realize now that the things that newspapers do with their Web sites are the same things that radio stations and television stations do with theirs.

When you get down to it, there are five major categories of news media, the newspaper, the magazine, the television station, the radio station and most recently the independent news Web site.

As an online journalist you have an opportunity to work for any one of those news mediums. If you take a look at each of those examples they all have at least two of the these things: Flash packages, slide shows, audio, video and Web sites. If you play your cards right, you’ll have your pick of the litter when it comes time to choose what medium you want to be a part of.
